The GSU’s business is largely undertaken through various committees, which are chaired by one of the Executive Directors. This is a great way to get involved in your GSU and acquire useful skills. Become a BoD Member
The Board of Directors is made up of representatives from various departments and units across Memorial University. If you are interested in becoming a GSU Board Member, please complete the following nomination form and email it to ED Academic; academic@gsumun.ca.

Health and Dental Committee
This Committee is chaired by the Director of Finance. Its purpose is to review dental plan fees and design, to ensure the plan efficiently utilizes graduate students’ health and dental fees. The Committee monitors current and future trends in coverage to ensure the plans meet the needs of the majority of graduate students. Furthermore, it actively promotes the plan to member of the GSU, to ensure that members are aware of opt-out deadlines, plan rules and design. It will adjudicate health and dental plan opt-out appeals, as necessary. The committee reports to the BoD at least once per semester, and at the Spring and Fall Semi-Annual General Meetings.

Constitutional Committee
The Constitutional Committee is chaired by the Director of Communications. This committee is responsible for reviewing all matters constitutional as directed by the BoD, and for acting as an advisor on matters of constitutional interpretation. Furthermore, this committee researches, develops and reviews any new articles or by-laws as directed by the BoD or General Members. Lastly it reports to the BoD any courses of action taken on all matters constitutional.

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee is chaired by the Director Finance. This committee reviews and distributes all financial information of the GSU. It reviews all GSU Grant Applications. Furthermore, the finance committee creates the annual budget for the GSU, which is presented and approved by the BoD.

The Academic Committee
The Academic Committee, chaired by the Director of Academic, works to promote student involvement in the GSU and at all levels around the University by ensuring that all committees are filled. Furthermore, the Academic Committee advocates for graduate students through helping students with appeals (when necessary), and organizing academic workshops that are held around GradFest as well as WinterFest. Members of this committee should be interested in the University committee structure and student leadership.

Social Events Committee
The Social Events Committee is chaired by the Director of Campus Life. This committee involves organizing and running all the social events held by the graduate students’ union. Some events held by the GSU are: Gradfest, Winterfest, Marble Mountain Ski Trip, Sea Kayaking, Relay for Life, Graduate Students Award Ceremony, Appreciation Parties and much more!

External Relations Committee
The External Relations Committee is chaired by the Director of Communications. It recommends to the BoD which political campaigns the GSU will publicly support and in which manner these political campaigns should be carried out.

Health and Dental Committee
The Health and Dental Committee is chaired by the Director of Finance. This committee discusses all health and safety issues surrounding graduate students. Issues at home, lab or office are discussed and decisions on how to proceed with these issues are made.

The Aldrich Committee
The Aldrich Committee is chaired by the Director of Academic. The Aldrich Conference is an Interdisciplinary Academic symposium, hosted by the GSU. Work in this committee involves planning, coordinating, and executing the Conference.
