GRADUATE STUDENTS’ UNION AWARDS 2022
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: 14 MARCH, 2022
ELIGIBILITY:
Any person registered as a full- or part-time graduate student at MUN who has not previously received a GSU award in the same category for which they are applying is eligible. Achievements must have taken place within ONE YEAR prior to the nomination deadline date.
Accomplishments resulting from research/ teaching/ community service conducted while not a graduate student at MUN, and not within the one-year timeframe from the nomination deadline, will NOT influence committee members’ evaluations
GSU AWARD IN TEACHING EXCELLENCE:
This award recognizes graduate student excellence in teaching. Nominees should display dedication to teaching undergraduate and graduate students as instructors or teaching assistants (TA). Assets that show excellence in teaching include previous awards in teaching, feedback from previous students/course instructors, and letters from departments. Additionally, it is also recommended that applicants submit examples of teaching materials (e.g., a syllabus they have created) to further demonstrate this excellence.
GSU AWARD IN COMMUNITY SERVICE:
This award recognizes graduate student excellence in community service. It is based not just on the quantity (number of volunteer experiences) but on the quality of the experiences as well. Nominees should display an exemplary commitment and contribution to improving the community of MUN and the surrounding area. Assets that show excellence in community service include previous awards for community service and letters from leading members of organizations volunteered for. Additionally, it is also recommended that applicants submit examples of the work they have contributed to (e.g., pictures of events) to further demonstrate this excellence.
GSU AWARD IN RESEARCH EXCELLENCE:
This award recognizes graduate student excellence in research. It is based not just on the quantity (number of research projects/publications) but on the quality of the research as well. Nominees should display a commitment to contributing to the improvement of research within their field. Assets that show excellence in research include previous awards in research, letters from project supervisors, involvement in research projects beyond their thesis/program requirements, publications, conference oral and poster presentations, and supervising fellow students on research projects. Additionally, it is also recommended that applicants submit examples of research (e.g., excerpts of publications, conference awards, etc.) to further demonstrate this excellence.
LETTER OF SUPPORT:
Nominees must submit one (1) letter of support. The nominator must be familiar with the nominee’s research/teaching/community service at MUN. The nominator must provide the nominee with a maximum two (2) page letter of support, signed and on letterhead, in a PDF format. The Nominee must then submit the letter of support, along with the rest of the award application, by the appropriate deadline. The nominator can contact gsu@gsumun.ca or campuslife@gsumun.ca with any questions.
**It is the responsibility of the nominee to ensure that their application is complete, truthful, and submitted by the deadline.
Applications will not be accepted after the advertised deadline, nor will incomplete applications be considered. Awards are only based on the one-year period prior to the nomination deadline and ONLY achievements within this period will be considered.

A complete application must contain the following:
- The award application (to be found on the GSU website and social website)
- One(1) Letter of support
- Curriculum Vitae
- Additional documents to support the application
