Student Space on Campus

The lack of student space on campus is becoming an increasingly serious problem. Over the past several years, the university administration has reassigned cafeterias, study spaces, lounges and common areas to other functions. Additionally, many students in departments are forced to share an office with up to 15 other students, while some graduate students have no office space whatsoever. This negatively affects students, faculty and staff. While the Graduate Students’ Union provides residential and office space for students in Field Hall, even its availability is limited.

The Graduate Students’ Union is committed to fighting for additional student space that is controlled by students. Students’ needs are varied – from meeting rooms to office space, graduate student society space to multi-faith prayer space, study areas to concert venues. These needs must be integrated into long-term plans for the university. The Graduate Students’ Union intends to campaign on this issue in the coming year to ensure students’ needs are met in the months and years ahead.
