Dorcus Makassy

Dear Fellow Graduate Students,

I am honored to announce my candidacy for Executive Director of External Affairs in our Graduate Students’ Union (GSU). As graduate students at Memorial University, we are more than scholars—we are leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Every day, we contribute to groundbreaking research, advance knowledge, and shape the future. But to reach our full potential, we need strong representation, bold advocacy, and meaningful engagement beyond the classroom.

The role of Executive Director of External Affairs is not just about communication—it’s about action. It is about ensuring that our concerns are heard, our rights are protected, and our opportunities are expanded. I am committed to serving as your bridge between the student body and the university administration, policymakers, and external organizations. My vision is built on three core pillars: Advocacy, Engagement, and Representation.

1. Advocacy: Standing Up for Our Rights

Graduate students face real challenges—securing affordable housing, accessing mental health resources, improving international student support, and ensuring fair funding opportunities.

If elected, I will:

• Fight for stronger financial support for graduate students, including funding, bursaries, and research grants.

Advocate for fair housing policies that protect students from rising rent and unfair conditions.

Advocate for mental health initiatives that address stress, burnout, and well-being support tailored to graduate students.

Fight for fair wages and better working conditions for research and teaching assistants.

We deserve more than just promises—we need tangible action!

Engagement: Strengthening Our Community

A strong student union is built on active participation. I will work tirelessly to:

• Create networking opportunities by connecting students with industry leaders, researchers, and community organizations.

• Host career development programs, including workshops, mentorship initiatives, and collaborations with external organizations.

• Promote multicultural events to celebrate diversity and ensure that every student feels valued and included.

• Enhance partnerships with community organizations to provide students with volunteer, research, and career opportunities.

Together, we can build a thriving, engaged, and empowered graduate community.

3. Representation: Amplifying Our Voices

Too often, decisions affecting us are made without our input. I will ensure that:

• Our concerns are heard at university meetings, city council discussions, and national

student forums.

• Policies reflect our needs, whether it is regarding student fees, visa policies for international

students, or funding allocations.

• Students have direct channels to voice their opinions through town halls, surveys, and open meetings.

Your voice matters. Your concerns are valid. I will ensure that no graduate student is left unheard.

Why Me?

I bring experience, passion, and a strong track record of advocacy and leadership. My commitment to fairness, transparency, and student well-being drives my candidacy. If elected, I will work relentlessly to protect your rights, amplify your voice, and strengthen our community.

• Vote for strong advocacy.

• Vote for meaningful engagement.

• Vote for a leader who will always stand by your side.

Vote Dorcus Makassy for Executive Director of External Affairs!

Together, we can create lasting change.

Sincerely,

Dorcus Makassy
