My name is Gaayathri Sukantha Murugan, and I am running for Executive Director of Communications at GSU. I completed my undergraduate degree at MUNL’s Grenfell Campus. I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Political Science, and will be beginning my Master of Gender Studies program in Fall 2025. 

I believe I am the right person for this role, as I have several years of experience with student advocacy and chairing meetings during my undergraduate degree, first as Councillor-at-Large on the Grenfell Campus Student Union, and then after graduation as the Chairperson of Canadian Federation of Students NL (2022-23). I bring over 8 years of experience managing and creating content for personal and professional social media accounts across different platforms, most recently as the Vice President of Public Relations for the Political Science Graduate Students’ Society. I am also trained in media relations. I have several years of experience with social justice movements and advocacy for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, to which I belong. 

I value transparency and accountability, and if elected as Executive Director of Communications I will strive to ensure the website and social media are updated regularly, and that all meeting minutes, GSU Constitution, the By-Laws and other related documents are made accessible to the student body. My familiarity with the campaigns and services provided by the GSU enables me to widely communicate that information to students during GSU events. 

I am familiar with the Constitution and the By-Laws; I attended the GSU’s Constitutional Forum because I am passionate about creating a thriving graduate student community. I am committed to bridging the communication gap between the GSU and the student body, not just via social media, but also by organizing in-person, face-to-face meetings. If elected, I will reach out to student societies and graduate officers to understand their specific concerns better, and bring my findings to the Executive Council and Board of Directors to address. I will also organize Student Town Halls to listen to the interests, concerns, problems, and suggestions from the general student body.
