Mohammed Imtiyas Masthan

I’m Mohammed Imtiyas, an international graduate student at Memorial University, running for Executive Director for External Affairs in the GSU Election 2025. My journey at MUN has shaped me into a proactive advocate for graduate students, and I am committed to addressing key issues like housing, parking accessibility, and financial support.

One of the biggest challenges we face is parking accessibility. The current lottery-based system is inefficient, making it difficult for students who rely on their vehicles to secure parking. If elected, I will collaborate with MUN’s Facilities Management and the City of St. John’s to push for a fair, transparent, and accessible parking solution.

Additionally, I will advocate for the revival of Bitters, a once-iconic student pub that now stands as a financial liability to the GSU. With the upcoming Canada Games, we have a unique opportunity to transform Bitters into a sustainable and student-focused space.

Housing affordability is another pressing issue, especially for new students arriving in St. John’s. I will work towards better university housing support and push for the utilization of Field Hall’s upper floors—originally designated for student housing but currently underutilized. This would provide more on-campus housing options for graduate students.

To ease financial burdens, I will push for stronger financial aid programs and improved on-campus employment support. No student should struggle to afford necessities while pursuing their education.

Beyond these key issues, I am committed to enhancing student engagement and representation. I have actively contributed to GSU initiatives, including student orientations, tax clinics, and cultural events, and have gained valuable experience as a Graduate Event Coordinator with the Indian Youth Association.

This has reinforced my passion for community-building and advocacy.

If elected, I will work closely with student groups, university administrators, and external organizations to bring more professional development opportunities, networking events, and student support programs to enrich our graduate experience.

This election is about action, not just promises. My platform is built on collaboration, advocacy, and execution to ensure that the GSU takes real steps in addressing student concerns. I am ready to champion your voice, implement real solutions, and make a positive impact for all graduate students at MUN.

Your vote is your power—let’s work together to build a more inclusive, supportive, and student-focused GSU. I humbly ask for your trust, support, and vote in this election.

Let’s bring the change we deserve!

Students united will never be defeated!
